I believe that the song was composed in order to show how globalization is affecting the little things in life, that surround us, that we take for granted, don’t pay any attention to. In this fast-paced world where people who stop to enjoy the finer things in life, are left behind, the songwriter is trying to tell the listeners that our homelands are being changed, the environment being the main victim. The songwriter feels very strongly that nobody cares about the environment. The fact that he refers to the building of a carpark and hotel as the paving of paradise shows that the environment is being sacrificed in this rapidly developing world. He also refers to the fact that the public is made to pay to walk into parks and just enjoy the serenity. He is trying to tell us that there are forces at work that are taking away our basic rights to enjoy nature and turning it into a privilege by charging money to enter nature reserves. He is urging us to keep the environment in mind while we continue to develop. Also, he is telling us to keep our family in mind when he talks about his father, in this world where family takes a backseat to business, he is trying to tell us to keep our priorities straight and not lose sight of what is important in life.Though the songwriter is somewhat biased against globalization, all that he has to say is true in that we really don’t pay attention to life’s more important things.
